This Paper discusses the route geology of the Waterstock–Banbury section of the M40 Oxford–Birmingham motorway. A desk study by Ove Arup and Partners in 1973 was followed by various site investigations between 1978-1983. These established design parameters and the nature of the material encountered. The geological units are reviewed in descending stratigraphical order. Consideration of the geology along the route indicated that some sections with specific geotechnical problems were to be expected.
