It is essential for transportation agencies to make an effort to provide safe and smooth pavement. Fine-grained exposed aggregate Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement has been successfully used in Europe and Japan as an alternative solution to simultaneously reduce the noise level of PCC pavement and to enhance long-term skid resistance. As the advantages of the fine-grained exposed aggregate PCC pavement are well recognised and there are a number of research reports, more comprehensive and thorough research is sought for better design and field practice specifications. This study aims to investigate the fundamental properties of the exposed aggregate PCC pavement, and expects to provide useful information for design and construction. An appropriate type of coarse aggregate mix design of exposed aggregate PCC pavement was suggested with consideration of noise reduction, skid resistance and strength of exposed aggregate PCC pavement.
