UK airfield pavement design using French asphalts

The requirement to build durable, sustainable and low-maintenance airfield infrastructures has become more important in recent years due to the expected air traffic increase and its impact on the environment. The high customer expectation of infrastructure availability and minimum traffic delay during maintenance has also become significant. This paper introduces French asphalt mix design methods for use in airfield pavement construction as an alternative to conventional UK materials, to offer improved performance and better whole-life cost solution. A case study at Sumburgh Airport in the Shetland Islands, UK is presented.
