This paper analyses and quantifies the impact of demand and airport characteristics on the level of service (LoS) provided to passengers at baggage claim areas. A computer simulation was used to analyse operations and generate LoS indicators under various alternative scenarios. In total, 720 scenarios for domestic baggage claim facilities were analysed in this research. With Brazil hosting the Football World Cup and the Olympic Games, studies on baggage claim areas and airport characteristics are very important to ensure that Brazilian airports are ready for the anticipated volume of traffic demand. São Paulo/Guarulhos international airport was used as a case scenario and collection of data at this airport was only possible for domestic flights. The factors that oscillated most in the variable response (average waiting time) were the time taken for baggage to be moved from the aircraft to the carousel and the time passengers take to get from the aircraft to the carousel. This indicates that these two factors are those that have the greatest influence on average waiting times at the baggage claim area and suggests that management at the airport should pay considerable attention to the management/coordination of activities responsible for these variables.
