This paper describes the demonstration scale flash pyrolysis of solid recovered fuel (SRF) derived from municipal solid waste (MSW) at Scarborough, North Yorkshire, UK. The project was supported by the Defra new technologies demonstrator programme, which provided support funding to demonstrate new technologies under the UK waste implementation programme. One of the technologies supported was the Scarborough Power Ltd plant based on the Graveson Energy Management Ltd flash pyrolysis system and located at Seamer Carr in Scarborough, UK. The process involves the flash pyrolysis of SRF derived from MSW to produce synthetic gas, which is combusted in a gas engine subsequently to generate electricity. This paper describes the management of MSW in the Scarborough region and the production of SRF for processing by the flash pyrolysis process.
