The demonstration of waste recovery is at the core of every contaminated land remediation project in which a soil treatment scheme is utilised. The definition of waste: development industry code of practice is a new voluntary approach by which recovery can be clearly established with its use providing an alternative to the complex regulatory regime of exemptions, permits and enforcement positions. This briefing describes how the code has been used at one of the most renowned remediation projects in the UK – the Avenue coking works in Chesterfield – where VSD Avenue (the joint venture contractor comprising VolkerStevin, Sita Remediation and DEC) is employing thermal desorption, bioremediation and complex sorting as proven remediation technologies.
