The assessment and planning of Cardiff Bay Barrage required an extensive programme of hydraulic studies, beginning with a pre-feasibility study leading to the full feasibility study. Following approval of the basic barrage scheme and the award of a design contract more studies were needed to confirm the design criteria and refine certain aspects of the design. The paper gives an overview of the full range of hydraulic studies undertaken by HR Wallingford, including flood routing, water quality, sedimentation and wave studies.
