The Protective Barrier is a self-supporting offshore concrete gravity platform which forms a complete ring around the existing Ekofisk Storage Tank. It was installed initially as two half units, and was subsequently connected offshore in order to protect the Tank substructure and the associated production equipment contained thereon from severe environmental action resulting from the effects of subsidence at Ekofisk. The Paper provides a description of the design and engineering of the Protective Barrier, together with an account of the construction and installation work. This experience has led to recommendations for code changes, which would be of benefit in the future design and construction of similar offshore structures.
