This Paper presents the results of an analysis of sluice records of the outlet of Loch Leven in Fife, Scotland, to derive a run-off record from 1855. The sluices, their mode of operation and the data available for them are described, and an account is given of the work undertaken to calibrate them. The monthly and yearly run-off record derived from this calibration, which is believed to be the longest such record in Britain, is presented, and its accuracy and significance are discussed in the context of the even longer Edinburgh rainfall record.
