Purpose

Breakthrough technological innovation is a necessary way for enterprises to achieve leapfrog technological catch-up, and the digital economy brings opportunities for them. How to realize breakthrough technological innovation through innovation ecosystems in the digital economy is a practical issue that requires study.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the innovation ecosystem perspective, this study selects 32 representative IC enterprises in China as cases and proposes financial resource, R&D human resource, industry-university-research cooperation, digitalization, government subsidy and regional digital innovation as antecedent variables, using a mixed research method of necessary condition analysis and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis.

Findings

This study finds that the configuration paths of high breakthrough technological innovation can be summarized as innovation factor-driven, policy and cooperation-driven, digitalization-driven, ecological synergy-driven paths and that of non-high breakthrough technological innovation can be summarized as R&D human resource-deficient, financial resource-deficient and regional digital innovation-deficient paths.

Originality/value

This study provides theoretical references and practical paths of breakthrough technological innovation in the digital economy.
