Supercomputing Conference SC98
The annual Supercomputing Conference, which is co-sponsored by the ACM SIGARCH and the IEEE Computer Society celebrated its 10th anniversary conference on 7-13 November 1998. Held in Orlando, Florida, USA, it returned to the city of its first meeting. In 1988 the Orlando conference attracted 1,000 people, an estimated 5,000 or over attended SC98.
The conference continued in the tradition of previous conferences, focussing on networking, distributed computing, data-intensive applications, supercomputing, scalable computing, and other emerging technologies. In addition to the usual presentations of technical papers and tutorials, SC98 featured an education programme, research, poster and industry exhibitions. SCinet also featured in its SC98 form.
The theme of the SC98 education programme was "using collaborative technologies to advance the understanding of high performance net-working, and computing in education". Although continuing to concentrate on classroom applications, the programme also explored new models for teaching and learning that are facilitated by networking and computing tools such as the WWW, Java, real audio, mbone, work-group tools, video conferencing over the Internet, visualisation and virtual reality.
SCinet98 offered a state-of-the-art infrastructure for SC98 and was assembled, operated by researchers, exhibitors,networking equipment suppliers, communications carriers, and volunteers from university, government, and industry.
