1998 Workshop Multimedia and Networking Applications (MNA) Programme EPSRC Event
Scheduled for the University of Leeds, Leeds, UK (16/17 November 1998), it was a reflection on the Multimedia and Networking Applications (MNA) programme of the UK's Engineering Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) initiative programme.
The title given to the workshop was"Many technologies, many applications". Its aims were clearly given as:
to bring together the MNA community into a cohesive, synergistic whole;
to promote cross-fertilization of ideas and technology between researchers at different levels, e.g. communications, service, applications, human factors;
to develop the direction for future managed programmes after MNA;
to promote the programme and results generally;
to encourage industrial take up of project results specifically.
The current MNA programme has been running since 1986 and funds 37 projects. A final call, it was reported at the meeting, was planned for 1999. The number of participants was limited to 150 and the demand for places was high.
The workshop included presentations that reflected on the current programme and took a long-term view of the future.Working group discussions were held on the focus of potential future programmes.
Of great interest were the posters and demonstrations which described currently funded research projects.

The future of programmable networks (Dr Ian Wakeman, Sussex University, UK).
Education and research networking architectures and development, (John Dyer,UKERNA).
Diabetic patient care (Dr T. Kindberg, Queen Mary and Westfield College,London, UK).
State of the art in collaborative visualisation (Dr David Duce, CLRC,Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK).
