At this price the book has to be a bargin for anyone who wants to know about Java, whether they have or have not got programming experience. It starts with an introduction to computer terminology which in itself is encouraging. Enough syntax is given so that programs can be introduced. The reader progresses chapter by chapter to learn more about objects, classes and syntax. There are chapters that cover graphics, interfaces, some basic algorithms and the built-in I/O Java classes.

In addition, a website is available to provide source code for students and aids for course lecturers.

It is regarded by many reviewers as an excellent text which provides an introduction to both Java and to programming. The one disadvantage is that it covers Java 1.1 but many of the features transfer to all versions.

Well thoughtout and informal in style makes it a very suitable training or course text.
