Article Type: Preface From: Kybernetes, Volume 38, Issue 5

The Guest Editor of this special issue is Yves Cherruault who was a Professor at the University of Paris VI and the Director of MEDIMAT Laboratory of that university. He now has the title of Emirient Professor.

MEDIMAT specialized in mathematics applied to biology and medicine: methods for the identification, optimisation, optimal control were developed under his directorship, as well as methods for solving non-linear functional equations. In consequence, he was both well placed and qualified to be involved in the organisation of the 1st conference on “Models and Mathematical Methods and their Applications to Biology and Industry” that was recently held in France. He was the Scientific Committee President of the conference and was therefore idealy positioned to arrange the selection, updating and refereeing of the contributions that make up this special issue. He outlines the scope of this issue in his introduction and also in his earlier report to this journal of the conference itself, as well as-providing contributions. We are grateful to him and to the authors who have contributed to this issue for the care in which they have prepared their papers and to the referees who have “peer-reviewed”them. By updating their contributions after the conference ended authors had the“ultimate review” which was that of the participants at the event, who held question sessions and discussions on their presentations.

Further conferences are to be arranged which will again confirm and recognise the success of the first endeavour and in particular the high-quality and interest of the presented works. We believe that this special issue also makes an important contribution to both the field and to the literature.

As is our custom, this issue also contains the journal’s regular sections and readers are once again invited to send relevant contributions for publication in our future issues.
