Recent developments in workstations and software that make it possible to extend the utility of existing library systems are discussed. These developments provide an excellent foundation on which to base future library automation, especially in the context of a research library. Further, this technology suggests that the concept of a “scholar's workstation” is technically feasible. Some experiences with the use of this technology to explore ideas central to the development of a scholar's workstation are also reported.
