American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference

Introduction

The following is a sample of the highlights of the joint annual conference of the American Library Association (ALA) and the Canadian Library Association(CLA) held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada from June 19-25, 2003. This was the first joint annual conference between the two Associations convened in Canada.

This year we have several reports from the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA). We have two reports on programs which address Web site design and optimization. Catherine Mill and Holly Yu provide an in-depth report on the full day preconference sponsored by the LITA Internet Resources Interest Group on recreating a Web site. Holly Yu partners Johan Ragetli to provide another detailed report of the Internet Resources Internet Group program on optimal design considerations. Hui Hua Chua prepared a report on the LITA Digital Technologies Interest Group on different perspectives on the practicalities of electronic publishing. Sherrill L. Weaver and Claudia Timmann contributed a detailed summary of the co-sponsored program by the LITA Distance Learning Interest Group and the ACRL Distance Learning Section on the development and delivery of library services for distance learning programs offered by higher education institutions.

Our final offering is from Heather Tunender on a joint forum on metadata for digital reference services sponsored by the Reference and User Services Association and the Library of Congress.

The 2004 Annual Conference will be held in Orlando, Florida from June 24-30,2004.
