Purpose

This article aims to report on a two‐day leadership summit which is held each year for Special Library Association Chapter Presidents and Program Chairs. The paper also aims to describe the format and discusses the advantages of such training for local association representatives.

Design/methodology/approach

This a simple report of a short leadership training session which describes the format and group exercises comprising the sessions.

Findings

The author finds that this intense concentrated training session, using short presentations and small group discussions, works well and seems to provide ample opportunities for interaction among participants leading to an increase in knowledge and understanding, as well as enjoyment. One positive outcome is the enhanced opportunity for information sharing.

Originality/value

The author concludes that this kind of leadership skill training has value for not only the new chapter or division leader but for the seasoned information professional as well.
