This bibliography contains references to 2,101 works on knowledge management: 1,505 articles, 404 books, 186 Web sites and six videos. Although the work as a whole is not thematic, the citations to articles are listed under 15 topical sub‐headings, including “… Background and development”, “… the learning organization”, “information audit”, “… the information professional”, and “… competitive intelligence”. Each section has a brief, non‐evaluative introduction. The book includes a short description of the bibliography’s development and an index to cited authors. It is attractively presented. The compiler, Paul R. Burden is a librarian.
Burden compiled the bibliography through searches of online book and video catalogues, the WWW, and 34 online databases, primarily using the search terms “knowledge management” and “intellectual capital”. There is no list of journals in the field. Most items were selected on the basis of abstracts or reviews; relevance ranges from marginal to significant.
Most included works were published between 1995 and 1999. Some, but not all, earlier foundation work is included, as are some items (mostly books) published during 2000. In addition to works outside these boundaries, several important works which were indexed using terms which pre‐date, or are more specific than, “knowledge management” were not found. Much of this omitted work is, however, included in the more selective bibliographies on listed Web sites.
While it is not intended to be a pathfinder or a scholarly bibliography, the lack of annotation, scholarly review, or explicit delineation of included and excluded works, means that this book provides little guidance for a newcomer to knowledge management. It is suitable for inclusion in a university or other research library whose clients are interested in knowledge management. Readers interested in knowledge management would get most value from the bibliography if they used it in conjunction with scholarly bibliographies of the field.
