Microelectronics is the science and technology that currently has the highest public visibility, but the science and technology that will dominate the future will be biology. Biology will dominate because it will have enormous genetic, medical, health, agricultural and other consequences. Indeed, some computers and other “machines” may be constructed in part from complex proteins and other organic matter. But biology will prevail in an even more important and deeper human sense. It will take root in our minds and give us a whole new manner of looking at, and understanding, man and the universe and, therefore, management. Biology will do this because it is about living things, about creatures and life, birth and death, creativity and destiny, synthesis, complexity and novelty, sickness and health, the vitalism, variety, change and evolution in the universe. In fact, biologically oriented thought is already affecting to a degree our perceptions and understandings of business, organisation and management. This new paradigm might be called “biomanagement”.
