One of the main criteria of any PhD thesis is that it must provide new knowledge – either new results in support of a theory, or point to a new theory. New theories, typically, are by their nature “possibly generalizable” – a starting point of research, rather than definite proof. In our everyday life, theories can just be invented. A PhD student, however, must in order to gain respect with fellow researchers for her proposed new scientific theories ground them in writing in logically sound arguments and evidence. Also, in grounded theory, the theory typically evolves during actual research in an iterative manner. This article presents the thoughts and experiences of one researcher on how to achieve these, by combining two methods, constructive research approach and triangulation, into a thesis that combines TQM and organizational culture.
