This study tests whether Ansoff's strategic success hypothesis (SSH) can be operationalized as a measurable strategic posture diagnostic and whether that diagnostic is associated with cash-based performance under turbulence. The aim is to provide a managerially usable alignment metric with transparent empirical grounding.
We analyze a 10-year panel of 107 Nasdaq-listed firms (2006–2015). Strategic posture (X1) is derived from the optimal strategic performance positioning (OSPP) diagnostic; performance is year-over-year operating cash-flow growth (X3). We estimate posture-performance associations and report extensive diagnostics and intercoder checks.
Strategic posture is positively and significantly associated with operating cash-flow growth, with modest effect sizes that remain robust across alternative functional forms and diagnostics, consistent with a severe single-predictor test on a volatile cash outcome.
Evidence is drawn from large US publicly listed firms, and the main single-coder panel is supported by supplementary intercoder validation studies. The results provide a transparent quantitative reference point for like-for-like replications and for future extensions using alternative outcomes, geographies, industries and turbulence regimes.
The OSPP-based posture score helps boards and top management teams measure alignment, benchmark it against turbulence, diagnose posture-capability gaps, and prioritize corrective action. It should be used as a decision-support tool for strategic discussion and capability-building, not as a deterministic performance forecast.
This is the first large-sample, cash-flow-based association test of SSH using the OSPP posture diagnostic. It advances SSH from a conceptual alignment proposition to a replicable diagnostic framework and provides instruments and supplementary validation materials for further research.
