Petrochemical and refining operations can cause severe environmental damage due to emmisions to soil, air and ground‐ and surface water. The general framework for remedial actions is primarily determined by the legal framework and the actual risks associated with levels of contaminants present at a site. Within the basic framework of legal procedures, site specific constraints and economic motives, the best available techniques (BAT) for remedial action will have to be evaluated. In most cases this is part of an overall environmental improvement and investment program for a facility. This paper describes the general background of soil remediation at refineries and provides an overview of applicable remedial technologies.
