This nineteenth edition of State of the World is dedicated to the forthcoming World Summit on Sustainable Development to be held in Johannesburg. It assesses the progress, and the lack of it, made since the meeting in Rio ten years ago, and analyses the challenges and tasks that the World Summit has to address if the next century is to show genuine progress towards a sustainable society.
Published annually in 28 languages, State of the World is relied upon by national governments, UN agencies, development workers and lawmakers for its authoritative and up‐to‐the‐minute analysis and information.
