Finlands greenhouse gas emissions down 10 percent

Greenhouse gas emissions fell by more than 10 percent in Finland last year,according to the latest official figures from Statistics Finland. Total emissions in 2008 amounted to 70.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent,1.2 percent below Finland’s Kyoto target. Emissions from the energy sector fell 21 percent compared with 2007, due to an increased proportion of hydropower generation and recession-induced slowdowns in Finland’s energy-intensive paper and metal industries. Emissions from transport also fell by 4 percent. Finland has also become the first country to contribute to a $60 million (€40 million) UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) scheme to mitigate climate change by supporting low-emission agriculture in developing countries. Finland has pledged an initial $3.9m (€2.6 million) of funding for 2010-2011.
