Welcome to another issues of MEQ. As always, readers will find on this issue a further set of interesting papers on aspects of international environmental management. On this editorial, I would like to comment on a report issued by the European Sustainable Development Network, on the future of the European Union Sustainable Development Strategy (EU SDS) in light of the Rio+20 outcomes.
The report is divided into five main chapters. The first chapter presents the Rio+20 process and its implementation at the EU level. The second chapter offers a comparative analysis of the Rio+20 outcome document and EU policy strategies, whilst the third chapter gives a description of those objectives included in the EU SDS of 2006 that have not been achieved yet. In the fourth chapter, consideration is given to recent developments at European level, such as the proposal for a 7th EAP and the EU Commission Communication on Rio+20 that was published in February 2013. Finally, in the concluding chapter, the report provides some points of reflection that aim to stimulate discussion and prompt further debate.
The report shows that the EU needs to renew its political commitment to move toward sustainable development, outlining the needs to engage all member countries to contribute to the common global challenge, and to push for the ambitious implementation of what has been agreed at Rio+20. It also points out to the need to ensure effective action for sustainable development, inclusive green economy and poverty eradication. These issues are also very important to this journal, which will follow, monitor and reports on the progresses seen in these areas, in coming issues.
Enjoy your reading!
