This study aims to determine the impact of the severity of monophobia symptoms on hospitalization-related anxiety, quality of sleep, communication patterns and hospitalization-related factors among patients admitted to general health-care settings in Jordan.
A descriptive, cross-sectional, predictive design was used to collect data from 306 patients from three major referral hospitals through a self-reported questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of sociodemographic and work-related variables, sleep disturbances, monophobia, hospital anxiety and communication patterns.
The total mean score of monophobia was 2.7 (SD = 3.0), indicating a mild to moderate level. About 39.2% (n = 120) indicated a moderate to severe hospitalization anxiety, 50% (n = 153) of the sample had a score of 57.0 or less in the communication pattern scale indicating moderate to high level of effectiveness of practicing communication skills and 50% (n = 153) had a score of 25.0 or more on sleep disturbances scale indicating moderate level of sleep disturbances. The analysis showed that the significant predictors were: hospitalization anxiety (B = 0.36, p < 001), sleep disturbances (B = −0.05, p = 0.021), type of room preference (B = 0.34, p < 0.001) and having a companion (B = 0.56, p = 0.047).
Health-care professionals (HCPs) need to be aware of the signs of monophobia that affect their patients and the intended health-care outcomes.
This study introduces empirical evidence for monophobia inducing higher levels of hospitalization anxiety and affecting their communication with HCPs.
