Purpose

This paper aims to critically reflect on a personal journey of growing up and living as a highly sensitive person (HSP) and increase awareness about concerns related to HSPs.

Design/methodology/approach

The essay is written in an autoethnographic style.

Findings

The purpose of this paper is to portray the challenges posed to those who are highly sensitive in the pursuit of optimal functioning and adaptation to the environment.

Research limitations/implications

Personal experience is grounded in empirical evidence to support its relevance to HSPs and to illustrate possible implications for those HSPs.

Practical implications

Expanding the awareness about potential challenges HSP might face.

Social implications

HSPs are often highly adaptable at their own expense. Promoting ways to reduce self-judgement and consequently isolation in HSPs would support healthy adaptation.

Originality/value

This essay details challenges highly sensitive individuals might face due to their unique set of characteristics and predispositions and how these can be overcome.
