The opening sentences are “good nutrition is essential for good health. However, maintaining a good nutritional status and adequate nutritional intake during illness is often difficult”. This puts into context the challenge for those dealing with patients with cancer.

This is an extremely comprehensive book which includes chapters written by various experts and covers:

  • Cancer in the twenty‐first century.

  • Cancer and nutritional status.

  • Treatments.

  • Effects of malnutrition.

  • Nutrition screening.

  • Nutritional requirements.

  • Psychosocial influences of food choice.

  • Nutritional support.

  • Late effects of cancer treatment.

  • Nutrition and palliative care.

  • Cancers of different sites and their effect on nutrition and recommendations for nutritional management are included as separate chapters.

I found each chapter easy to read and also each ends with an excellent summary and also a list of references.

This book would seem to be a must for any dietitian's bookshelf and invaluable for students and medical staff.
