This book starts with a quotation:
Knowing is not enough, we must apply, Willing is not enough, we must do (Goethe).
This is very apt for the situation regarding calcium and vitamin D as over the last ten years so much has changed. The book is compiled by a committee and the first section covers this and the aims of the committee. No longer is vitamin D and calcium just considered in relation to bone health.
There is a section on an overview of calcium, which has an excellent section on calcium through the life stages.
In a section on an overview of vitamin D there are interesting pieces of research on the storage of vitamin D in adipose tissue. Information on the role of metabolites on the immune system and also carcinogenesis is discussed. Again there is a section on life stages and vitamin D as well as information on the synthesis of vitamin D by the action of sunlight on the skin.
Each chapter is extremely well referenced and there is a very good index plus glossary.
The book concludes with the Dietary Reference Intakes.
For students this provides a good resource and for others with an interest in nutrition an excellent update on calcium and vitamin D is provided.
