Cooking for kids

Earlier this year celebrity chefs across the country visited schools to give children cookery information during a holiday cooking scheme. Nearly 3,000 11 and 12 year olds took part in Cooking for Kids to learn about food preparation, food safety and hygiene and to be taught basic cooking skills. Research has shown that while nine out of ten children know how to play computer games, only half of them know how to cook an egg. The RSA Focus on Food Cooking Bus travelled the country to give children the chance to try their hand at healthy cooking. Celebrity chefs visited 38 secondary schools to help run cookery sessions and around 75 primary schools joined up with secondary schools for this initiative. The RSA and the Food Foundation have supported the scheme and worked in partnership with the Departments of Health and Education and Employment to organise the week’s events.
