An independent survey conducted on behalf of the British Potato Council found that not one single customer questioned the safety of chips bought from their fish and chip shop in spite of the recent media hype surrounding GM foods. The survey did highlight the fact that shop owners need more information about GM foods. Some 86 per cent of owners said they would feel uncomfortable answering questions about GM potatoes. The survey also found that over half of those interviewed were unaware that GM potatoes are not grown commercially in this country. Around 90 per cent of owners said that more facts would be useful in the future to help them talk to customers should they ask about GM foods. Half the businesses surveyed served over 200 customers each day.
