Baby food
The Consumers' Association has found that nearly 40 per cent of all UK baby foods contained either sugar or fruit juice, including six savoury meals. Their survey also found out that 40 per cent of UK baby foods contained starch additives which bulk out the food. For example, Cow and Gate's sage and turkey casserole contained more maltodextrin than turkey. Some baby food labels are misleading or are poor descriptions of what they contain. For example, Cow and Gate's banana rice pudding contains no fruit, just banana flavouring. Baby Organix also published a survey which showed that two out of three so-called organic brands in the UK are not 100 per cent organic and some manufacturers mislead parents by stating the fresh weight of ingredients in dried foods. Suzannah Olivier who is a nutritionist says that babies cannot afford to eat empty calories. The small portions babies eat at each meal need to be full of nutients to fuel their rapid growth.
