The School Food Trust recently teamed up with chefs across the country to give the nation's favourite school meals a modern spin as part of British Food Fortnight.

Several chefs, including Rachel Green and Rob Rees, devised recipes for their favourite school meal and gave it a healthier twist in line with the new school food standards introduced in September.

They join chefs including Brian Turner and Alan Coxon in turning traditional favourites into more nutritious meals. All of the recipes are ones that parents can cook at home, helping ensure that great start to healthy eating.

Brian said of his school meals: "School meals back then can best be described as adequate.

They weren't exactly a gastronomic treat and barely gave you enough nutrients to get by. It's fair to say, though, that times have changed and we need to take health at school much more seriously.

New standards have come into place to make school meals healthier and we need to make sure our kids see the benefit. The proof is in the pudding so I urge parents and children to at least give them a try".

The recipes:

  • Brian Turner – chicken village pie;

  • Rachel Green – pea and tuna fishcakes;

  • Galton Blackiston – really good fish pie;

  • David Nowell – meatballs in tomato sauce with herb mash and brocolli florets;

  • Brian Mellor – scouse lamb with root vegetables;

  • Rob Rees – plum, apple and blackberry fruit cobbler;

  • Alan Coxon – turkey skewers with spring onion relish.
