Most authorities agree that we are in a critical period which will become more critical as the century progresses. There is, however, a small but persistent body of opinion that the enormous strides taking place in agricultural and food technology could solve this problem until such time as the world population becomes stable and that it is economic or political factors which stand in the way of the advances.
