In April 1978 the Government decided to enable local Education Authorities to provide free school milk for seven to 11 year olds, and thus to take more advantage of the EEC subsidy for school milk. Authorities were already able to claim the EEC subsidy on free school milk for five to seven year olds, which they are required by law to provide. Details of this scheme are contained in the National Dairy Council booklet, Extension of the School Milk Scheme.
