Dr Widdowson began her lecture by pointing out that sex influences body weight and survival rates from the moment of conception. It is well known that the average birth weight of boys is greater than that of girls, but why should this be so? The fact that so many male foetuses ‘fall by the wayside’ leads to the assumption that the larger, stronger male babies survive.
