New briefing papers from BNF

The British Nutrition Foundation has produced two new briefing papers: Nutrition and Food Processing and Meat in the Diet. Nutrition and Food Processing looks at the context of feeding large urban populations and examines the impact of a variety of processing techniques on the nutritional value of foods. Fortification and enrichment of foods with a variety of nutrients is also addressed as well as some of the potential nutritional problems associated with food processing. Future developments, including functional foods and genetically modified foods,are also considered.

Meat in the Diet considers consumption trends, the types of meat eaten in the UK and the role of meat in a healthy balanced diet. Food safety is also reviewed looking at issues such as BSE, microbiological concerns and food hygiene. These two briefing papers will be of special interest to teachers, college lecturers and students. They will also be of interest to dietitians, nutritionists, those working in the food industry and other health professionals.
