Asian organ donation

In February 1999 there were 574 people from the Asian community on the waiting list for transplant organs in the UK. Around 3 per cent of the UK population is from the Indian sub-continent and around 13 per cent of patients waiting for transplants are from the Asian community. The Government and health professionals are working with the South Asian community to raise awareness of the need for donor organs. This community will be at the forefront of an overall public campaign to raise the awareness of the importance of telling those close to you if you wish to be an organ donor. The campaign began with advertising and supporting editorial in the South Asian press and includes material in Punjabi,Bengali, Urdu, Gujarati and Hindi as well as English.
