Help for carers

A cash boost of £50 million has recently been announced by Health Secretary Alan Milburn to enable up to 75,000 more carers to receive a break from their caring duties. One in six homes has a carer and this new investment will mean that they have pratical help and support and, importantly, proper respite from the tasks of minding older, infirm, disabled and sick people. There are an estimated 5.7 million carers in the UK. In England it is estimated that 1.4 million of those carers devote at least 20 hours a week to caring while some 730,000 care for more than 50 hours or more. There is a Web site for carers at www.carers.gov.uk.
