Food industry promotes healthy habits in all UK primary schools

More than 25,000 primary schools received a revolutionary new, interactive programme, which involves teachers, parents and pupils in encouraging balanced eating and healthy lifestyle habits, while supporting the 3 "R"s curriculum.

The programme, "Join the activaters", has been developed by the Food and Drink Federation – voice of the food and drink manufacturing industry– to provide a comprehensive package of resources, making a fun and involving way for children to learn about combining physical activity with a balanced diet.

Set against a growing concern about children's diet and health, the programme helps teachers of 7-9 year-olds take a realistic look at the challenges of following a healthy lifestyle. Issues such as: what is fruit and veg? how can snacks and drinks form part of a healthy diet? how not to be a couch potato (and still be cool!), are taken head-on and set in the context of the national curriculum.

Karen Barber, foodfitness Director said: "The UK food and drink manufacturing industry takes the dietary needs and health of all its consumers,in particular children, very seriously. "Join the activaters" is based on sound science and developed from current research on healthy eating and physical activity. It emphasises four key messages – always eat breakfast, don't be a dolittle, aim for five fruit and veg a day, and be active".
