Eric is one of the most frequently‐used databases. Created in 1964 by the Federal Government, Eric contracted various educational and professional organizations to act as clearinghouses in their special areas of study. The Eric clearinghouse for special education is the Council for Exceptional Children, an organization which also produces its own database, ECER. The relationship between the Council and Eric permits the online searcher to avoid duplication of citations.
