Users of any Z39.50‐compatible search system can now access databases on SilverPlatter's ERL servers, regardless of hardware and software differences. ERL (Electronic Reference Library) technology was originally developed by Silver‐Platter precisely because the then Z protocol did not offer the features that customers had come to expect with SPIRS (SilverPlatter Information Retrieval Service): there are now over 400 ERL servers at sites worldwide, and around 270 databases accessible in this manner, available on a subscription basis.
