Editorial
Article Type: Editorial From: Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies & Management, Volume 35, Issue 1
It is an honor and a privilege for us to submit our very first editorial as the new editors of Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies and Management. We are looking forward to serving you, the contributors and readers, in this capacity. As many of you know, Policing was established when Police Studies: International Review of Police Developmentmerged with the American Journal of Police. Today, Policing is widely regarded as a premiere outlet for publication in the field of policing. The journal is unique for several reasons. First, it is one of the only journals specifically devoted to policing issues that is ranked by Thomson Reuters (ISI). A second unique quality is its international focus. With the ever-increasing global nature of our society, it is essential that the international core of this journal be respected and maintained.
You may notice some gradual changes during our editorship. After many years of outstanding service, Dr Stan Shernock has asked to step down as the book editor. We welcome Professor Michael Birzer from Wichita State University as our new book editor. Dr JW Carter II has graciously agreed to continue on as our Internet Editor, a section of the journal that we hope to expand over the coming years. We would also like to welcome Carol Archbold (North Dakota State University), Jeff Rojek (University of South Carolina), Kim Rossmo (Texas State University) and Ivan Sun (University of Delaware) to our Editorial Advisory Board. Mathew Lynch has been appointed as our editorial assistant and will be the initial point of contact for many of you for the next few years.
One of our goals is to experiment with social media to better promote the journal and its content to a broader audience. While many academics have ready access to the contents of the journal through their library on-line databases,practitioners in the field often do not have access to these resources and may not be aware of the journal content. Plans are in the works to develop a Facebook page for the journal and to make use of Twitter and other venues to stay connected to our audience. We also hope to increase the number of interdisciplinary perspectives that are published in the journal. In the coming years, we will embark on a deliberate strategy to seek out quality research from a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, public administration,geography, political science, business, and international studies.
Since the late 1990s Policing has been led by Professor Lawrence Travis. We all owe a debt to Professor Travis for building the reputation of Policing.Professor Travis established the expectation for high quality research that was relevant and had an impact for both academics and practitioners in the field. As we move forward in this next chapter of Policing, we are committed to honoring this standard of excellence. We would also like to thank Professor Travis and Carlos Rojas for their assistance during this transition.
