It may seem incongruous to say paintmakers should operate in a state of grace. But a state of grace means refinement of movement which is, surely, pleasing all round. However, such pleasant states don't come easy and further, one needs to be constantly vigilant to ensure the gross do not impede and then destroy. Or, because of an oblivious attitude to changing environment, one's elegance becomes ill‐adapted to new terrain. Often grace is seen to be combined with ebullience and profit and, provided the flexibility just referred to is maintained, then we are on the road to long‐term stability, at which juncture it is apt to make a point. When all the options have been juxtaposed, we are left with a stark and relevant absolute: it is impossible to stand still and remain graceful, ebullient and profitable.
