BIP launches emission control service

Keywords BIP,Emissions, Environment, Resins

Experience in monitoring and controlling emissions from its own resins and chemicals manufacturing plant now enables BIP Limited to offer a specialist monitoring and consultancy service to companies facing their own emission problems (Plate 1).

Plate 1 BIP's Analytical and Environmental Monitoring Unit is demonstrated by this installation which has overcome emissions to air of volatile organic compounds from its own amino moulding powder factory at Oldbury

A major proportion of BIP's output at its Oldbury, West Midlands factory are amino-based plastics moulding powders, specialist coating, textile and paper treatment resins (also based on aminos) and unsaturated polyester resins.

In anticipation of new legislation on emissions to atmosphere, BIP set up its own, specialist Analytical and Environmental Monitoring Unit under Dr Adrian Murphy who brought with him many years of experience in chemical analysis. Once set up, the Unit"stood back and looked at the source of the problem". Prior to this, consultants had been advising the company to use abatement techniques in what would have become very expensive solutions.

By measuring and monitoring the various processes and clearly identifying the precise causes of the emissions, Dr Murphy's team proceeded to devise effective and what is significant especially economic answers. In processes such as methylating and butylating amino resins and the manufacture of polyester resins, the anticipated abatement schemes have been replaced with systems of process control frequently costing less than one tenth of the initially projected figures; at the same time, emissions have been reduced by as much as 80 per cent.

The capability of the Analytical and Environmental Monitoring Unit is demonstrated in how it overcame emissions to air of volatile organic compounds from its own amino moulding powder factory at Oldbury. Having researched a number of techniques, the Unit identified a novel bioreactor system as both the most suitable and the most cost effective. Its novelty it had, until then, only functioned as a pilot operation was influential in BIP's attracting funding from the European Union.

The basis for the team's programme of achievement is a laboratory fitted with in excess of £500,000 worth of state-of-the-art environmental analysis equipment. This and the Analytical and Environmental Monitoring Unit's continually widening experience are now available as part of the service which BIP is introducing. Industrial processes which can benefit are as varied as paint manufacture, textile treatment and the steel industry, as well as any site where cleaning and degreasing agents are in use.

BIP's Analytical and Environmental Monitoring Unit is fully conversant with all aspects of toxicity and health and safety as well as being ISO accredited.
