Help is now on hand for product developers grappling with design challenges or simply looking for inspiration.

Surface technology experts DB Partners is launching a dedicated R&D division and helpline, believing that an early injection of creative finishing advice could make developers'lives a little easier and overcome design problems further down the production cycle.

It is the brainchild of surface technology expert Preston Hemming, who has over 20 years' experience in the industry, solving increasingly complex design challenges in recent years(Plate 6). In his new role as R&D director he said, "A carefully engineered finish can help any product, whether by enhancing its attractiveness to customers or making it safer to use or more durable. But, all too often,finishing is considered when it is too late.

Putting finishing first undoubtedly shortcuts production difficulties but, more importantly, a creative but appropriate finish will help the product sell. Developers are under increasing pressure to get new and better products to market fast and we can help."

DB's R&D division is already working on a number of projects for clients in a number of industries including plastics, electronics, engineering and defence.
