New addition to Zetasizer range

A new high sensitivity(HS) particle sizing option is now available for Malvern Instruments Zetasizer 1000 and 3000 laboratory-based dispersion technology systems, which are used for zeta potential and particle size measurement in a wide range of applications.

It is thought that the new HS option will be particularly beneficial for measuring small samples, dilute samples and those which scatter light only poorly.

All New Zatasizer 3000 systems will be fitted with the HS option.There will be a choice when purchasing a Zetasizer 1000, and for existing Zetasizer 1000 and 3000 users the HS option is retrofittable.

It is reported that trials of the new Zetasizer HS option have demonstrated that it confers up to a 20-fold increase in sensitivity compared with existing systems. In practical terms this means that 95 per cent of all sizing applications can now be accommodated using a single standard instrument such as the Zetasizer 3000HS. The need for expensive, specialised instruments to cope with difficult high sensitivity applications is therefore diminished.

Such a large increase in sensitivity has been achieved by adopting a new approach to the issue.

The Zetasizer series uses laser-based technology for particle size analysis. Until now, the only way to enhance sensitivity has been to use lasers of increasingly high power. This is costly and presents difficult technical challenges. Malvern Instruments claims that it has circumvented the laser power issue by focusing on the detector systems. Using the latest Avalanche Photodiode Detector (APD) the Zetasizer HS systems have been engineered to produce an improved count rate equivalent to using an external 20mW 488nm blue laser ­ but without any of the technical problems.
