The Impact of Coatings - Britain's most visible industry tells its story

Britain's most looked-at products - coatings, paints and printing inks - get a boost in a new review brochure published today by their trade association, the British Coatings Federation, which represents the major producers.

There's a suggestion that the Motor Show, for example, should be called the Paint Show, because that is what you see when you go there. An estimate that there are now 30 million home decorators using paint. That over 14 million newspapers depend on 100 tonnes of printing ink every day.

The dual role of coatings - protection and enhancement - is well illustrated,as is their absolute necessity in, for example, electricity supply,telecommunications, civil and structural engineering, transport, electronics,packaging and of course, the home.

Coatings not only create the environment but they also save it - trees,metals and greenhouse gases due to energy saving. A wafer-thin coating of anti-fouling paint on the propeller of a typical oil tanker saves fuel worth£300,000 a year - plus all the greenhouse gases that this fuel would have produced.
