With the addition of six new microsphere inks, Marconi Data Systems (MDS) has increased its palette of colours to 11 in this range, making it possible to find an ink that reportedly will be visible against almost any background. In common with their predecessors, these new water-based additions are NEK/methanol-free. They claim to provide a good-contrasting, fade-resistant opaque code on many different types of substrates.

The new colours are red, blue, green, black, orange and brown. They join white, purple, yellow, grey and pink. All the MDS microsphere inks are said to be compatible with each other and can be mixed in any proportion to achieve the ideal colour. Changing the colour in the printer is said to be as easy as replacing the ink bottle with the desired alternative; no additional cleaning is required. All fluids use the same make-up fluid and cleaner.

These inks claim good adhesion to a number of substrates including glass,metal, plastic, rubber and paperboard. Some of the many applications currently being served by the microsphere inks include printing on to automotive parts,videotapes, cables, stainless steel pipes, clear and amber containers,insulation material, etc.

The full range is stated to be compatible with all standard MDS Videojet EXCEL® printers and excellent dry times of 2-3 seconds can be easily achieved with air assistance.
