Heavy plant vehicles assembled with Araldite methacrylate adhesive

Keywords: Plant and machinery, Vehicles, Adhesives

An innovative design for heavy plant vehicle cabs that replaces conventional metal panels, cladding and components with plastic parts to improve ergonomics and reduce costs is now being manufactured by Germany's Heywinkel GmbH with the help of an Araldite methacrylate adhesive. Heywinkle supplies cabs for Volvo and Komatsu Hanomag.

The Araldite 2022 adhesive was key to the project that called for bonding of thermoplastic components including the ABS steering column and cab hinges. The two- component, toughened methacrylate is specifically formulated for use on a variety of hard-to-join thermoplastics, including polycarbonate, ABS, PVC and fiberglass- reinforced composites, with minimal surface pretreatment. It claims good gap-filling characteristics and attains handling strength after 18min at room temperature. In service, the adhesive reportedly maintains a combination of high strength and flexibility even when exposed to oil, gas and temperature extremes (Plates 3 and 4).

Vantico also reports that use of its adhesives is not confined to heavy industry, to manufacture a sparkling array of costume jewellery including pins, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and rings adorned with glass, semi- precious stones, ceramics and pearls, Artist Empire Jewellery Mfy. Ltd, based in Hong Kong, relies on Araldite 2000 adhesives. The Vantico epoxies and methacrylates, that are formulated to bond a broad range of substrates, are said to be easy to apply and tough enough to reliably bond jewellery components (Plate 5).

According to Artist Empire Jewellery's purchasing officer, Mrs. Fung, the Araldite 2000 epoxies are the materials of choice because they exhibit superior adhesive strength. She adds, "with more than one million pieces per month being bonded, the uniform quality and availability of the Araldite 2000 products are extremely important to us".

Among the Araldite adhesives used in producing the jewellery line are new Araldite 2010 epoxy and Araldite 2021 and 2022 methacrylates. Araldite 2010 epoxy reportedly exhibits outstanding lap shear strength and peel strength at temperatures from −40°F (−40°C) to 104°F (40°C) and attains handling strength in 30min.

Araidite 2021 high shear and peel strength methacrylate claims good resistance to chemical and water exposure and a service temperature of up to 212°F(100°C) and is said to cure quickly in less than 18min at room temperature. Araldite 2022 toughened methacrylate is stated to bond plastic substrates with minimal surface pretreatment and is easy to handle with a work life of 10 min and cure time of less than 30 min. Other adhesives that are used in the jewellery assembly include Araldite 2011, described as a resilient,high-strength epoxy with a long, 2h work life, and Araldite 2012 toughened,fast-curing epoxy. The Araldite 2000 family of the products are thought to be ideal for bonding metals and ceramics, glass, quartz and semi-precious and precious stones.
